The MoU is for a proposed new national experimentation
and simulation facility
ROYAL Brunei Technical Services (RBTS)
will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with British
defence technology company QinetiQ today to establish a
proposed new national experimentation and simulation
facility in Brunei for use by the Ministry of Defence and
other government ministries.
"Nowadays when the military or other agencies procure or
purchase equipment, it's all about trying to minimise risks.
Therein comes the concept of modelling and computing to
minimise risk in terms of acquisition," said Lt Col (Rtd)
Amir Hamzah Hanafi, chief executive officer of RBTS, adding
that this is "something new" for Brunei.
RBTS will be acting as the lead contractor with support by
QinetiQ, one of its three strategic partners participating
in today's seminar and exposition during Universiti Brunei
Darussalam's (UBD) 20th Convocation Festival at the
Chancellor Hall.
Support from QinetiQ will include the transfer of
technology, skills and knowledge from QinetiQ to RBTS and
the provision of training for the local staff, Lt Col Amir
said.
Occupying a pavilion of around 60 square metres in a
strategic location within UBD's grand Chancellor Hall, RBTS
will be actively promoting itself as the leading acquisition
and systems management service provider in the country.
UBD officials are expecting around 200 senior high-level
officials from the government and private sector to attend
its annual festival, and about 10,000 visitors comprising of
staff, students and the public.
"We take it with a point of view of who will be attending
the convocation, namely senior high-level officials from the
government and private sector, and then you will also have
the public and the students coming in," said Lt Col Amir.
"So for us, we believe it's a very good opportunity to
market and promote RBTS," he added.
Tomorrow, RBTS will be inviting SMEs for a briefing on the
upcoming Brunei International Defence Exhibition (Bridex)
2009, where they will be offered business opportunities in
operating and providing spin-off services from the event
such as food catering, cleaning services, merchandising and
others.
Bridex 2009 will also be promoted during the festival in a
bid to attract potential local exhibitors and create public
awareness.
RBTS' three strategic partners namely QinetiQ, Systematic
and TechnoSciences will be putting up exhibits for public
display. QinetiQ will be showcasing a "mini-portal" on how
an experimentation centre works and how it can be developed
in Brunei to facilitate cost-effective acquisition
decisions.
Another UK-based firm, Systematic Software Engineering, will
be displaying their SITAWARE software, a command and control
System.
Moreover, TechnoSciences from the United States will be
showcasing the integrated maritime surveillance system
(IMSS), capable of monitoring small boat activities,
tracking of commercial fleet and providing coastal
surveillance.
Seminars will also be jointly conducted between RBTS and its
strategic partners on various fields, and will be attended
by officers and staff from relevant government ministries
and departments.
Potential candidates will also be able to explore career
opportunities with RBTS this coming Sunday.
